Ellen's Story

I was exhausted and tired of feeling that way. After all, it was 24 years of going from doctor to doctor; vacillating between hopefulness and helplessness; and often times spending more than half of my annual income in search of a "cure" for a condition I was consistently told couldn’t be cured. By age 47, I had spent almost half of my life searching and consulting with so-called Fibromyalgia "gurus" and experimenting with new treatments. Occasionally, I found temporary relief, but eventually the symptoms would return in full force and a steady downward spiral became the norm.

Shortly after graduating from college, I was suddenly afflicted with Fibromyalgia. At first no one could properly diagnosis the condition. It was the early 80's and most didn’t even recognize the disease yet. Multiple specialists, most of whom were too intimidated by something they couldn’t treat, ultimately told me it was all in my head - I was crazy. I was overcome with depression and suicidal urges. It seemed like the best way to end the pain. There was no light at the end of the tunnel for a long, long time.

But my search and struggle ended a little over a year ago. Thanks to a strong Buddhist faith and a determination to work through the myriad of information available to patients, I followed my instincts about what was going on with my body and eventually came to find one doctor who understood and was willing to work with me. Dr. Kent Holtorf, Chief Medical Officer for Fibromyalgia & Fatigue Centers, has been working with me to take control of the disease that forever changed my life. My energy levels over the past year have gone from 3 or less on a scale of 10 to solid and steady 7. My pain has significantly decreased, going from an 8 or 10 on a scale of 10 to now consistently rating between 0 and 2. Overall, my progress has been remarkable after such a long struggle to find help. I credit Dr. Holtorf and FFC’s patient-centric approach with helping me get back to a life I am happy to be living, not dreading. As I continue to progress, I have the opportunity to potentially lead a symptom free life.

My story is one of loss, but also one of gain. I have gotten so much from having gone through this struggle that I’m now ok with having had to go through it. A stronger faith, a caring husband and compassionate doctor who truly understands and supports my needs have all been benefits stemming from my struggle. I urge all sufferers to follow their hearts and never give up hope, there really is light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how long that tunnel may seem.
